CSA Week 4
Finally a sunny week to follow all of the rain and clouds! The market garden exploded this week after getting some much needed sunshine and warmer temps. Spring gardening in Colorado is always an adventure! The carrots have been slow to grow this year (probably due to our high temps and winds in the early spring), but I’m hopeful that by next week I’ll be able to include some wonderfully sweet little finger carrots in your bag. The tomato plants in the greenhouse are reaching 4 ft. and have lots of little green tomatoes on them! Waiting for them to ripen is always one of the hardest part of gardening for me because those little green tomatoes tease for such a long time! I’m trying a few different varieties of peppers this year (mostly sweet bell types) and have been working to get the soil conditions right for those to take off. Last year I got lots of little peppers but I’m hoping by decreasing the pH I will get some larger ones! We’ll have to wait and see!
One of the best parts of the farm this year has been adding the bees. As I work in the garden they buzz around doing their work too. It’s fun to have some co-workers! We will not have honey this year because the hives need to establish before we can harvest it, but by next year we should have some to share.
Last weekend’s Rhubarb Festival went really well! In about 2 hours, hundreds of pounds of Rhubarb were picked off of the massive Victoria Rhubarb plants. We are so excited for the future of our farm as we take over that business!
