CSA Week 5
Hail and Heat
This week again brought weather challenges! Should we be surprised? On Sunday, after heading home from picking our kiddo up at Rock Ledge Ranch where she volunteers as a junior docent, we watched the menacing clouds roll in. We parked the car and ran to put the roosters and ducks back into their pens for protection from the storm. We have been fortunate to miss the major hail storms and have even had very few minor events since living here. I wasn’t initially worried about covering the garden. It’ll enjoy the rain, I thought, and the storm clouds looked like they were about to clear. Until they didn’t. As soon as the hail started the beautiful lettuce heads were the first thing that came to mind- not the roof or the cars… I grabbed a laundry basket for a helmet and ran barefoot out into the garden to cover as many rows as possible. Some damage was still done (you’ll notice some of the kale, beet greens, spinach aren’t the prettiest) but I think my crazy dash under the cover of the laundry basket helped a bit. Between our goats climbing in the amazon truck, my silly kids and the things I do for the sake of pretty lettuce, our neighbors probably have some justification to be concerned. Or maybe (hopefully) they are just entertained. Now we have the heat to contend with. Ah! But I know the squash and tomatillos are going to explode!
We hope you are enjoying your produce! It’s been a trickier spring than usual but I have been so happy to grow for you!
No recipes this week as there are many repeat items. And also, no carrots! Trust me, we are bummed too but hey are still too small.
This week your CSA will have:
Head Lettuce, Baby Bell Radishes, Arugula, Microgreens and either lettuce mix or kale/beet/spinach mix. Additionally, bags will have two of the following items, sorrel, mustard greens, pea shoots, green onions, basil and parsley.
